The Intersections of Sex Education, Coaching, and Social Justice

The Intersections of Sex Education, Coaching, and Social Justice
By Jamie Azar, Certified Sex and Relationship Coach
Just to be clear—this is where I stand:
I stand with Black, Brown, Indigenous, and people of color.
I stand with queer and trans people.
I stand with immigrants.
I stand with sex workers.
I condemn racism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, and sexism.
And I refuse to ignore the intersections between the work I do in sexology, pleasure-centered coaching, and the larger fight for social justice and human rights.
Connecting the dots from Palestine to Los Angeles, from anti-trans legislation to the targeting of sex workers to the erosion of reproductive rights, this is all part of a global project of dehumanization.
Decolonizing our collective body from these systems of oppression means engaging in active, embodied unlearning. It requires rejecting internalized shame and dominant narratives that tell us our bodies are not ours to love, protect, or celebrate. As Kelsey Blackwell, author of Decolonizing the Body, writes, “Decolonizing the Body means being in the practice of unlearning embodied white dominance, how our bodies have learned to contort in order to survive under systemic oppression.”
Whiteness, as a construct, is rooted in imperialism, colonialism, and the Christianization of the West. It demands assimilation and conformity, and it offers a conditional form of belonging at the cost of our authenticity. Under its weight, we learn to disconnect from our bodies, suppress our desires, and deny ourselves the full spectrum of joy, pleasure, and liberation.
White supremacy thrives when we diminish ourselves, when we mute our voices, and when we internalize and both consciously and subconsciously uphold oppressive ideologies. The symptoms of colonization live in our bodies as repression, shame, and self-betrayal. Whether it’s the criminalization of migration, the attacks against queer and trans people, or the dismantling of access to abortion and gender-affirming care, these assaults are rooted in the same oppressive systems.
Our freedom to migrate, to love, to live in safety, to access affirming healthcare, and to receive comprehensive, consent-based sex education is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
So is our right to experience pleasure. To know joy. To feel at home in our bodies and in our communities.
